Chapter 6: Hot Pursuit

Coco

Coco hoped and prayed she wasn’t burning any permanent bridges with Luke by following Sergio from Sal’s cabin. Her gut told her Sergio was innocent of the kidnapping, but that he knew who the real criminals were.

“I wish you hadn’t come,” he snarled as he mashed his gas pedal to the floor and careened down the highway towards the river. “What I’m about to do is dangerous.”

“We’re a team,” she reminded gently. “Where’s your search dog?”

“At the station,” he returned grimly. “He proved in short order that he wasn’t yet up to the task at hand.”

“I’m sorry. Well, you have me, at least.”

“Do I?” he snarled. “Once upon a time, I thought we were a team. Correction. I hoped for it more than anything else in the world. But after our one trip to California together, you backed away from me like I was a leper.”

“I did not!” she gasped. “We stayed friends, same as we always were.”

“I disagree. It wasn’t the same,” he insisted. “After our almost kiss, you all but avoided me, which wasn’t easy while training on the same volunteer search and rescue team after hours.”

“I have not been avoiding you,” she muttered. “I just didn’t want to give you the wrong idea. Didn’t want to have to keep turning down your offers to date and hurting your feelings. I happen to like and respect you too much for that.”

“Thanks, I think.” He gripped the steering wheel tighter as he drove.

“When were you going to tell me about your son?” she demanded.

“As soon as it was safe to do so,” he returned grimly.

“Sergio!” she wailed. “You’re my team mate, and I want to believe your innocence; but you’re seriously going to have to give me a little more to go on here.”

His hands slapped the wheel. “You really think I’d kidnap and carve on my own son?”

“Of course not!” she shot back. “I still need answers, though. After living next door to Sal for months and growing very attached to both her and Davy, I found out tonight that she’s not even his mother. What is going on, Sergio? Who is Davy’s real mother, and what else have you been keeping from me?”

“His real mother is dead,” he announced bluntly, “along with most everyone else I ever cared about. My mother and father, my oldest brother. Only Sal and I got out alive.”

“From what?” she asked, voice rising incredulously.

“From the cartel that controlled our town back in Puerto Rico. They had their hands around the necks of every business owner and home owner. Even the PD where Sal’s husband and I worked. We hoped that if we left everything we owned behind — our homes, our bank account, our vehicles — that we’d finally escape the clutches of the cartel. Since we were both trained lawmen, we jointly put in a request to transfer stateside and were lucky enough to get a position at the same department within a few months period of time.
